What is the IEEE Senior Member Grade?
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world’s largest professional technical society operating in engineering, informatics, electronics, and related fields. In IEEE’s membership system, the highest grade available through direct application is the IEEE Senior Member grade. It is awarded based on members’ technical maturity and professional accomplishments. Only a small percentage of total IEEE members reach Senior Member status, which enhances the exclusivity and prestige of this grade.
Application Criteria
Who Can Become an IEEE Senior Member?
To become an IEEE Senior Member, candidates are expected to be active in fields designated by IEEE, have at least 10 years of professional experience, and have made significant contributions (significant performance) for at least 5 years during this period.
IEEE recognizes the following fields as “IEEE-designated fields”:
- Engineering
- Computer science and information technology
- Physical sciences
- Biological and medical sciences
- Mathematics
- Technical communication, education, management, law, and policy
Engineers, researchers, academics, technical leaders, and practicing professionals working in these fields can apply for Senior Membership.
Professional Experience: 10-Year Experience Calculation
Applicants for IEEE Senior Member are expected to have at least 10 years of professional experience. When calculating this period, the time contributed by education can also be considered.
Education | Contribution to Experience |
---|---|
Bachelor’s Degree | +3 years |
Master’s Degree | +4 years |
Doctorate | +5 years |
🟡 If your professional experience exceeds 10 years, the contribution from education is generally not considered. However, in borderline cases, the shortfall can be made up with the duration of education. In this calculation, only one level of education (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate) is taken into account; periods from different degrees cannot be combined to extend the duration. If education and professional work periods overlap, panelists will only count one of them. Therefore, it is very important to clearly specify the dates — the years you were in school and the years you worked full-time should be explicitly stated.
📌 Information in the Professional Experience section should be entered from the most recent to the oldest (in reverse chronological order). This makes it easier for panelists to follow your experience. If you meet the 10-year requirement solely with professional work experience, there is no need to add education contribution separately.
Significant Performance
In order to stand out during the application process, candidates are expected to demonstrate tangible and meaningful professional contributions for at least 5 years. The following examples represent important types of contributions:
- Leading technical teams, managing projects, or assuming responsibility for system architecture
- Developing and implementing software or hardware solutions that provide measurable benefits in the industry
- Holding patents, contributing to technical books, or publishing in peer-reviewed journals
- Participating in award-winning projects or contributing to the development of recognized technical standards
- Developing academic courses or training successful students
📌 These contributions may have been made in the industry or in academia. Each candidate is expected to clearly describe their contributions, specifying dates, responsibilities, outcomes, and results. It is also recommended to list your contributions in the Significant Performance section from the most recent to the oldest (reverse chronological order), which will allow panelists to follow your career development and technical impact more easily.

- References: You can initiate your reference requests by entering the IEEE Member Number of the individuals who will support your application through the system. References must complete the form and submit it to finalize their recommendation.
✨ You do not need to complete the entire application form in a single session. You can save your information as a “draft” and continue later from where you left off.
Sample Application Text
Below you can find the “Professional Experience” and “Significant Performance” texts that I used for my IEEE Senior Member application. The proof documents linked in the Proof section were also uploaded to the Attachments section in PDF format.
🟡 These texts are intended to provide an idea of what kind of structure and narrative style could be used in the application form. The texts are directly taken from my own application. Please adapt and customize them based on your own experiences and contributions.
🟡 After sufficient reference forms have been completed and submitted, you will only be able to add files under the “Attachments” section of your application. No edits can be made in other fields. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly review and finalize all your information before your application moves to the “Pending Review” status.

Reference Process
One of the most critical steps in the application process is finding references and completing reference forms. For an IEEE Senior Member application, at least three IEEE members at the Senior Member, Fellow, or Honorary Member grade must endorse you. However, there is no upper limit on the number of references; you can add more than three references, and this is even encouraged.
✨ If your application is initiated by a nominator, that person already counts as one reference, and only two additional references are required.
🟡 It is not mandatory for your references to know you personally; however, it would be healthier if they have an idea about your profile. Simply adding references is not sufficient for your application to be evaluated; the reference form must be completed and submitted through the IEEE system.
How to Find References?
It is an advantage if your references know you closely or have directly worked with you. If there are no individuals fitting this profile, different types of references that can be reached through the alternative methods listed below are also acceptable.
Section or Chapter Chair
The reference form includes Section or Chapter Chair information. It is technically possible to contact these people; however, considering the workload and the nature of the processes, this method may proceed slowly. Therefore, it is recommended to also consider alternative ways for faster progress.
IEEE Collabratec
You can search through the IEEE Collabratec site using the IEEE Membership Directory. Using the “Member Status” filter, you can list only those who are Senior Members or Fellow Members. You can also filter by your country or IEEE section to more easily find potential references from your region. Direct communication through the built-in messaging system of IEEE Collabratec is available.
You can search on LinkedIn using keywords like IEEE Senior Member or IEEESM to find suitable contacts among your first or second-degree connections and request support.
IEEE Membership Forum
You can create a post in the IEEE Membership Forum , sharing your reference request along with your CV, LinkedIn profile, and a brief introduction about yourself.
Events and Volunteering Activities
Another healthier and more sustainable approach is to participate in IEEE events, volunteering activities, or technical committee work, where you can meet people face-to-face and ask for reference support. This method also helps you build a stronger technical network. You can explore participation opportunities through the following links:
IEEE Events and Conferences
IEEE Technical Societies and Committees
IEEE Volunteering Opportunities
Sample Reference Request Message
✨ You can use the template below when requesting support from references. Keeping your messages short, concise, and clear will increase your chances of receiving a positive response.
✨ It should be noted that this process can be somewhat demanding. Your messages may not receive immediate responses, or you might not reach some people at all. People may be busy or may not be checking their messages regularly. Don’t lose hope; eventually, you will find candidates willing to support you. Therefore, it is important to increase your chances by sending messages to many more people than the number of references you need.
Dear [Name],
I am currently in the process of applying for IEEE Senior Member status, and as part of this process, I require reference support from existing members. If you find it appropriate, I would be truly honored to have your support as a reference for my application.

Reference Form Process
🟡 The reference process is a critical step in the application. Your application will not be considered until each of the following steps is completed:
- You must enter only the IEEE Member Number of the reference person during the application and save your application form by pressing the “Submit” button.
- The transaction will not be saved without pressing the Submit button.
- The system automatically sends an email to the person you added as a reference.
- The reference logs into their IEEE account via the link in the email and completes the form.
- The process is not complete until your reference fills out and submits the form.
✨ In the IEEE Senior Member Application Portal, you can track the status of the references you have added, add new references, or delete existing references via the “References” tab. When references click on the link sent to them and start reviewing the form, they are marked as “Draft”; once they complete and submit the form, their status will be updated to “Completed,” and you will receive an email notification. Once you have reached a sufficient number of references, your application will move to “Pending Review” status.
Completion and Evaluation Process of the Application
How to Complete the Application?
- The application form must be filled out completely.
- A sufficient number of references must complete their evaluations (at least 2 if a nominator is assigned, at least 3 if there is no nominator).
📌 These steps must be completed at least 7 days before the evaluation panel date. Otherwise, your application will be processed in the next panel session.
🟡 Interim evaluations may occur outside of panel dates, but they are not guaranteed. Always plan according to the official calendar.
After all these steps are completed, your application will move to “Pending Review” status in the system. When the panel date arrives and your application is transferred to the evaluation panel, the status will be updated to “In Review.”
Panel Schedule and Application Deadlines
Although applications are accepted throughout the year, IEEE A&A panels convene on specific dates, and only fully completed applications are considered. Therefore, all steps, including reference forms, must be completed at least 7 days before the panel date.
📌 IEEE organizes approximately 6 virtual panel sessions each year. Panel dates are published both in the application system and at the link below. When planning your application, it is important to create a timeline aligned with these dates. Although additional panels may be organized periodically outside of official dates, they are not guaranteed, so always base your timing on the official scheduled panels. You can find the panel details and schedule at the link below:
What Do Panelists Pay Attention To?
To facilitate the evaluation by the panelists, your form must be clear, understandable, and directly demonstrate that it meets the application criteria. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the following points:
- The Professional Experience section should include a short introduction text: It should clearly and concisely reflect how many years you have been in the industry, the fields you have worked in, and your core technical competencies.
- The Significant Performance section should be explained with concrete examples and measurable outcomes.
- Date ranges should be clear and easy to read in the relevant sections. Avoid repeated dates and focus on specific periods.
- Avoid unnecessary length and excessive technical details; use clear and concise language.
- The form must be prepared in Plain Text format.
- The application should be enriched with additional documents and evidence (attachments).
What Is Required for Application Approval?
- At least two panelists must approve the application for it to be accepted.
- If one panelist approves and the other rejects, the application is not finalized; typically, additional information is requested or the decision is deferred.
- If both panelists reject the application, it is directly rejected.
- If one panelist approves and the other requests deferment, the application is marked as “Deferred” and may require further review.
- In some cases, panel leaders may assign a third panelist for critical or borderline cases (exceptional situations).
- In a deferred status, the applicant may be asked to provide additional documents or clarifications, after which the application is re-evaluated.
Application Result
Application results are usually announced about 1 week after the evaluation panel. The status on the IEEE Senior Member application form may be updated earlier in the system, but it may take several days for the official email notification to arrive. Results are sent directly to the email address specified in the application form and can also be tracked through the system.
As a result, your application may be:
- Approved (you will be promoted to Senior Member status),
- Further information or clarification may be requested,
- Rejected (in which case you are advised to develop further in the required areas before the next application).
Applicants whose applications are accepted are officially notified by IEEE via email. This email includes information about the benefits of becoming an IEEE Senior Member, a link to a form where you can send a congratulatory email to your organization, and instructions for updating your profile information for the issuance of a personalized plaque. Your new membership status is also updated in the IEEE system.
