What Awaits Us After Approval?
Once our IEEE Senior Member application is approved, the application status is updated to “Approved” on the Senior Member portal. This system update automatically reflects on our membership information, and the “Senior Member” title begins to appear in the “Membership and Subscription Information” section. Additionally, our membership icon on IEEE Collabratec is displayed in bold to represent Senior Member status.
The status update also reflects on our IEEE membership account and digital membership card. We can access, view, and download our card and updated certificates from the “Membership Card and Certificates” section of our membership page. If desired, we can also request a printed membership card by contacting the Senior Member support email at Senior-Member@ieee.org.
After these processes are completed, we receive an official confirmation email titled “Senior Member Grade Elevation Notification” from IEEE. The email notifies us that our status has been officially elevated and includes details about the new benefits and necessary actions. It may take a few days for this email to arrive.
It is also important to ensure that our profile information and delivery address are up to date, as these details will be used for plaque delivery and other official documents in the next steps.

Senior Member Plaque
The IEEE Senior Member plaque is a prestigious award specially prepared in your name after your membership is officially approved. Crafted with a metal plate mounted on a wooden base, this plaque symbolizes your professional reputation and technical achievement, serving as a memorable piece you can display in your office or workspace.
It is important to ensure that your IEEE profile information is up to date to ensure the plaque is printed correctly and delivered to you. The approval email contains the following notice:
“ACTION NEEDED: The plaque will be printed using your Preferred Name on your IEEE Profile and will be mailed using your Primary Address and Mobile Telephone Number (for International shipments) as listed on your IEEE Profile. Please log on to your IEEE profile within the next 5 business days and confirm your Preferred Name, Primary Address and Mobile Telephone Number are correct. Your preferred name cannot contain parentheses or quotations. Please note: missing or incomplete information may result in a delay in delivery of the Senior Member Plaque.“
🟡 According to this notice, you must ensure that your Preferred Name, Primary Address, and phone number are complete and correct. Missing or incorrect information may lead to delays in plaque delivery.
✨ Plaque delivery is carried out in batches at specific intervals and the process can sometimes take quite a long time. For international deliveries, it may take up to 6 months or even a year. Therefore, it is important to be patient and regularly check the delivery status.
📌 IEEE announces the plaque delivery process through an updated tracking page. You can check the status of your plaque and delivery process on the “Senior Member Plaque Status Page.”
✨ The production and delivery process of your IEEE Senior Member plaque consists of several stages. On IEEE’s tracking page, your plaque status will be displayed using one of the following expressions. Each status indicates which stage you are at and what actions are possible (or not possible):
Plaque Creation Pending:
Your plaque has not yet entered the production process. Production is pending at this stage. If any changes to the name or other details are required, you may contact IEEE at this point to request an update.
Plaque Creation in Progress:
Your plaque has entered production, and engraving is in progress. No changes can be made at this stage. Name spelling and other engraving details are locked in.
Plaque Preparing for Shipment:
Your plaque has been produced and is being prepared for shipment. This is the final stage before dispatch. No further changes to the shipping address or contact information can be made.
Plaque Shipped – Arrival by (Date):
Your plaque has been shipped. It is expected to be delivered by the date specified in the system. Tracking at this stage depends on local postal and customs processes. If it does not arrive by the specified date, it is recommended to first contact your local post office or customs office.

Free IEEE Society Membership and Referral Coupons
Upon our approval as an IEEE Senior Member, we are entitled to one year of free new IEEE Society membership (One Complimentary Society). This benefit is announced in an official email shortly after approval. The email also includes a congratulatory letter from the IEEE President and 4 referral certificates worth $25 each for inviting new members.
The official statement describes these benefits as follows:
“One Complimentary Society: You will be given the opportunity to join one new IEEE Society to which you do not already belong. (Note: this opportunity will be delivered to your email in the next couple of weeks and must be redeemed by the redemption date listed on the form.)”
“Newly elevated Senior members are encouraged to find the next innovators of tomorrow and invite them to join IEEE. Those you invite to join will receive US$25 off their first year of membership. (Note: Four discount coupons will be delivered to your email in the next couple of weeks.)”
To redeem the free Society membership, you must complete the form included in the email and send it as a PDF to senior-member@ieee.org. IEEE will use the information on the form to activate your membership. Requests made within the body of an email are not accepted by the system. The official text states:
“To redeem the free Complimentary Society, you must complete the provided form and email it to senior-member@ieee.org. Requests to join a society in the body of an email without the completed form cannot be accepted.”
Letter of Commendation
As announced in the IEEE Senior Member approval email, you may request an official letter of commendation signed by the IEEE President to be sent to your employer. This letter formally notifies your employer of your elevation and highlights your professional achievement. The official statement includes the following description:
“Letter of commendation: A letter of commendation on the achievement of Senior member grade will be emailed to your employer (upon your request). Request a letter of commendation.”
📌 To request the letter, you need to fill out the IEEE Senior Member Employer Notification Form. On the form, the “Individual to be Contacted” field should contain your employer’s details, while the “Requestor Information” field should contain your personal details and IEEE Member ID.
🟡 Since I own my own business, I entered only my name in this field for testing purposes. That’s why the name appears duplicated in the screenshot.

Announcements and Recognition
Your elevation to IEEE Senior Member status is not only a personal achievement but also an opportunity to increase your visibility within your professional community. IEEE offers the option to announce your elevation through its platforms as well as local and regional publications. The official email states the following:
“Announcements: Announcement of your elevation may be made in section/society and/or local newsletters, newspapers and notices. Please contact your Section Chair for more information.”
These announcements may be published by your local IEEE Section, the Society you belong to, local IEEE newsletters, or other industry publications. This enables your success story to be shared both with colleagues and a wider professional network.
How does it work?
If you wish to have an announcement made, you need to contact your Section Chair. The channels and formats available for announcements depend on your section’s policies and initiatives.
✨ By requesting an announcement, you can enhance your visibility both within your workplace and in professional circles. Sharing the announcement on platforms like LinkedIn can further boost your recognition.
✨ My example: You can see my announcement published on the official IEEE Turkey website here. Such an announcement can strengthen your professional profile and increase your recognition in the industry.
Authority to Serve as a Reference
Being an IEEE Senior Member not only elevates your professional status but also grants you the authority to serve as a reference for other applicants. The official description of this privilege is as follows:
“Ability to refer other candidates: Senior members can serve as a reference for other applicants for Senior Membership.”
How does it work?
A candidate must know your IEEE Member ID to list you as a reference in their Senior Member application form. Therefore, you need to share your IEEE membership number with candidates who wish to nominate you as a reference.
Once a candidate adds you as a reference, the request will appear under the “My Reference Requests” section in the IEEE Senior Member application portal and you will also receive an email notification. This notification includes guidance for completing the online reference form. You can view reference requests assigned to you on the portal, complete the online form for each request, and finalize the process digitally.
By completing these reference forms, you not only support the candidate’s application but also contribute professionally and strengthen your role within the IEEE community.
🟡 Submitting reference forms accurately and on time is critical for the candidate’s application to be processed without delays.
Serving as a Panelist
Another key benefit of achieving IEEE Senior Member status is the opportunity to serve as a panelist for reviewing Senior Member applications. The official description of this role is as follows:
“Review panel: Senior members are invited to be on the panel to review Senior member applications.”
This role offers valuable insight into the application process, enhances your understanding of evaluation criteria, and allows you to contribute professionally to the IEEE community. As a panelist, you evaluate applications submitted by candidates and assess them based on criteria such as technical maturity, contributions, and professional experience.
✨ From my experience: I had the opportunity to serve as a Senior Member panelist. Before the panel review begins, panelists receive a presentation and a detailed evaluation document. First-time panelists are also invited to a 15-20 minute live orientation session to explain the evaluation process and criteria.
📌 Panels are held several times a year. If you wish to serve as a panelist, you need to notify the Senior Member support team (at senior-member@ieee.org) approximately 2-3 weeks before the panel date. Those who have previously served may be given priority depending on availability. However, selection and invitation to panels depend on submission order and panel needs, so it is not guaranteed.

✨ Serving as a panelist not only allows you to evaluate others’ applications but also helps you better understand how your own application was reviewed and what aspects are emphasized. This experience can also help expand your network and increase your visibility within the IEEE ecosystem.
Leadership and Executive Roles
The IEEE Senior Member status not only recognizes personal achievement but also grants eligibility for leadership and executive roles within the IEEE community. The official description of this privilege is as follows:
“Leadership Eligibility: Senior members are eligible to hold executive IEEE volunteer positions.”
This eligibility opens doors to roles such as Chair, Vice Chair, committee leadership positions, and board memberships in IEEE sections, societies, and global initiatives. Such leadership opportunities are typically not available to members below the Senior Member grade, making this a significant pathway to influence decision-making and take part in shaping the direction of IEEE activities.
What types of roles might be available?
- Section Chair or Vice Chair
- Technical Society committee leadership roles
- Managerial roles in IEEE conferences and events
- Regional and global volunteer leadership positions
✨ These roles provide a valuable opportunity not only to contribute as a volunteer but also to strengthen your professional profile, expand your network, and gain leadership experience.
📌 Such positions are typically filled through election, appointment, or nomination processes. If you are interested in a role, consider contacting your local Section leadership or Society officers to explore how you can get involved.
